Help in Growing Pole Beans

When preparing a garden, you have the opportunity to plant all types of vegetables, fruits, and flowers but one option that should not be overlooked is growing pole beans.  These beans are delicious, they are easy to grow, and they grow in abundance.  Because of this, you can enjoy as much as you want and then share beans with family and friends.

Once of the most important aspects of growing pole beans are to make sure they are provided with a proper support system.  This type of bean has to have a stake because they grow upwards and depend on support.  Therefore, we wanted to provide some helpful information about the support system so you can enjoy a beautiful garden full of vegetables to include pole beans.

Although this is one of the most popular varieties of beans, some people will pass on growing pole beans because they feel they are too hard to handle.  The truth is that pole beans are easy to grow.  The easiest and most affordable type of stake is a straight stick.  You could even choose sticks found near your home if you live in an areas with many strong trees, you could use yardsticks, or purchase actual stakes made for growing pole beans.

The thing to remember is that you need supports that are tall enough.  Since this type of bean grows quickly and tall, the pole should be around seven to eight feet tall.  In addition, you will find the beans do much better climbing if the surface of the stick, yardstick, or pole is rough in that this provides something on which the beans can grab.

To start growing pole beans, you will need to find the right location, one that offers adequate space.  Some people will plant in a standard garden, which is fine, while others prefer to plant on a hillside.  Regardless, once the seeds or starter plant is in the ground, the support pole would then be placed in the center of the hole.  Then, the seeds/plant and pole would be covered with soil, leaving the seven to eight feet of pole sticking out of the ground.

If you want to try something different, you might consider growing pole beans using the teepee system.  This has actually become one of the more popular options, which is a special type of teepee that is made from bamboo.  To make your own, you could take four support poles, each measuring about six feet long, and then tying them together on one end.  Then with the loose ends, allow them to spread out into the shape of a teepee.

Of course, if you decide to use the teepee type of support system, you still need to make sure the “teepee” ends up being tall enough but also set deep enough into the soil.  Another option for growing pole beans is to use a trellis.  This type of support system can be purchased from any home improvement store, which is then leaned against a sturdy structure such as a house, barn, deck, etc.  The trellis would also need to be firm into the ground so the beans have a strong support on which to grow.
